Second Guessing Yourself

on

I hope you all are having a great Memorial Day Weekend. This week I have been struggling with trying to manage the plot of my next novel and for the entire week, had trouble writing the outline. The book was driving me crazy and I wound up making even more changes. By Friday I was finally getting somewhere and now the outline is complete.

I started this book before finishing the outline once again. Why? Because if I didn’t hurry up and get it started, I would immediately lose interest in the entire project. That’s just how I am. If I stop writing for a week, I will get a bad case of writers’ block that could last weeks and maybe even months. I don’t want that to happen because I don’t feel right when I’m not writing. It’s kind of how one feels when they are unemployed. It’s a feeling of uselessness.

This project came very close to not happening. Yes, I was considering giving up writing it and never coming back to it again. It was that old feeling of self-doubt trying to beat me down again. It happens to the best of us on occasion. The important thing to do when you start second-guessing yourself is to just keep going, even if what your writing sucks, just keep going anyway. Let it suck. Because you can always go back and change it later. You have to write a second draft anyway and that will be your chance to make it better. If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years it’s that when I don’t give up on something I want, I always get it. And so, will you.

This project has been an uphill battle for me more than any other novel. I’ve never written anything like this before. It’s turning into a Science fiction fantasy with some religious elements sprinkled in without trying to be preachy. I am indeed a follower of God, but I do not follow any manmade religion. I prefer it that way.

I want to be able to write freely and prefer not to get stuck sticking with the same genre for the rest of my life. That would get boring very quickly. I have many interests. You may get a romance novel one minute or a horror novel the next. I like to just go with the flow. I’m excited about this novel and appreciate my readers for being patient. It takes a lot of time and careful planning to write a novel, especially if you are talking about writing a series. I will continue to keep you updated on how this project is coming along. So, enjoy the holiday.

Until next time…
