Well Thanksgiving is this Thursday and I suppose I should be happy about it but for some reason I’m not. I have many things to be thankful for but when it comes down to the cooking, I plan to work with my mother at faking the best Thanksgiving dinner that we can throw together. I suspect that Turkey is going to be the main attraction as well as stuffing. Oh yeah, my mother used to make the most delicious homemade dressing but my father hated it and would you believe he’s requesting Stove Top stuffing this year? I know I don’t get it either.
I will probably make my famous candied sweet potatoes that I do not fake. Not even a little bit. Vegetables will also be on the menu. We haven’t decided whether or not to use fresh or frozen. Sometimes my mother just doesn’t care. She’s seventy-eight and no longer likes cooking. In fact she downright hates it. I love to cook when those who I’m cooking for are appreciative of it. I mean c’mon no woman likes to be taken for granted. It would be nice for husbands and fathers to offer to at least help out in the kitchen once in a while and maybe offer to help clean up because let’s face it…it’s a lot of work cooking for a family of six.
We usually watch the news during dinner. Something my father does religiously and when the news is on, you cant say a word until there’s a commercial.
My mother and I used to make desert like rum cake or sweet potato pies for the holidays but this year desert will be store bought. Most likely a delicious cake from Sam’s Club. Egg Nog? Not for me since I am Lactose Intolerant. Red wine is essential and some very interesting conversations about Donald Trump and the violence in my hometown of Chicago.
This week will be all about the food, but it will also be all about proofreading. I have been working on a new book trailer for the newly titled book that I just completed. The title was called “Spirit Walk” but has been changed to “The Blood Oath.” The trailer is completed. The book has been simmering on my hard drive and set aside while I do research for my next novel “The Human.” I wanted to wait a few days and proofread it again with fresh eyes.
However you spend your Thanksgiving, I hope you are able to spend it with the people you love most and count all of your blessings. I know that times have been hard for many but there’s also good things that are happening also. Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Until next time…
